lost in perfection
“There is an epidemic of socially imposed perfectionism, and coincidentally, it largely emerged after the first iPhone was introduced to the market.” (De Wit, 2023)
The pursuit of perfection is deeply rooted in human nature. In The Perfection Trap, Thomas Curran argues that perfectionism has become a cultural obsession. Everything has to be better, bigger, more beautiful — and only the very best seems good enough. Alongside social media, our belief that life is entirely within our control also plays a major role. Because if everything is achievable, then failure no longer feels like an option.

I chose the theme “Lost in perfection” to explore the desire to meet society’s expectations. The need to live up to unrealistic ideals, both outwardly and inwardly, can become so overwhelming that people begin to suppress parts of who they truly are. It becomes a mask of “perfection,” weighing down one’s natural identity and emotions.
